Microsoft forecast that it will sell about 4.5 million to 5.5 million Xbox 360 video game consoles in the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2006. That's the first indication of how many units the company expects to sell as sales kick off in North America on Nov. 22.
That may seem like a lot, but it's a conservative number. After all, Microsoft is launching in all three markets simultaneously. It has lined up three contract manufacturers to build the boxes, and IBM lined up Charetered Semiconductor as the second source for its Xbox 360 microprocessors. You would think that with all that firepower, Microsoft would be able to sell three million at the launch this year and even more in the subsequent six months.
The company said that revenue in the home and entertainment division (which includes Xbox, Microsoft TV, PC games and home consumer software) is expected to grow more than 50 percent in the fiscal year. That means it could grow from $3.2 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2005, to more than $4.8 billion by the end of next June. For the second quarter, which includes the Christmas holidays, sales are expected to grow 26 percent to 30 percent over a year ago. That's pretty impressive considering that last year's numbers included "Halo 2" sales. But it's a modest growth rate if you consider the fact that Microsoft will be launching a new console midway into the quarter.
Is Microsoft playing it safe with its estimates, or is its forecast tempered with caution because of the twin concerns of limited demand for the console and the inevitable hiccups that can occur in the manufacturing supply chain. Time will tell.

To ensure an immediate "sellout" of the Xbox 360 on launch day (therefore getting lots of media buzz about their new console), Microsoft will simply restrict the supply down to a trickle. My favorite part of the article: "In addition to limiting the per-store stock of consoles and having the retailers prepare to prominently note the unit's "sold out" status, Microsoft has allegedly asked Norwegian retailers to sign an agreement that they'll sell out of the consoles on the launch date.
Fear me more for I am root.
