OPEN source group the Mozilla Foundation has released the latest incarnation of the Firefox web browser, promising faster browsing and simpler updates.
The new version, Firefox 1.5, moved from beta to final release today. More than 100 million copies of Firefox had been downloaded to date, the foundation?s commercial arm, Mozilla Corporation, said in a statement.
The group claims Firefox 1.5 offers improvements in a number of areas, including faster browsing, better caching and protection against pop-ups and the ability to organise tabbed browsing windows. The new browser also comes with an automatic update mechanism that downloads and installs updates and patches.
Code contributed by IBM allows the latest Firefox release to covert web pages to speech for the disabled, the Mozilla Foundation said.
First released in November 2004, Firefox has emerged as the main competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the web browser market.
But Firefox's growing popularity has also seen it become a bigger target for hackers, with several exploits released for critical vulnerabilities in previous versions of the browser.
Firefox 1.5 would "draw many new users to the improved web experience it affords", Mozilla Corporation chief executive Mitchell Baker said.

J'ai fait une installation from scratch et redownloadé mes extensions. Je trouve que c'est vraiment plus rapide, et le fait que les tabs sont maintenant des objets que l'on peut interagir avec, ça pas mal cool! Mais j'ai des erreurs de RSS des fois, pour visualiser la liste des feeds... Pas checké si c'est connu ou non sur leur website... Someday!

Alors que Firefox 1.5 a été officiellement publié la semaine dernière (voir cette brève), la fondation Mozilla planche déjà sur la version 2.0 de son célèbre navigateur Web. Un premier « brouillon » des spécifications a d'ailleurs été publié sur le Wiki de la fondation.
