Halo 3, la nouvelle suite du populaire jeu d'action destinée à la console Xbox 360 de Microsoft, sera en vente le 25 septembre prochain, a annoncé la compagnie hier.

Le jeu sera disponible en trois versions: « Halo 3: standard » (60 $), « Halo 3: limited edition » (70 $) et « Halo 3: legendary edition » (130 $). La version limitée de Halo 3 contiendra des documents multimédias sur la conception du jeu, tandis que le boîtier de la version « légendaire » aura la forme du casque de Master Chief, le héros du jeu.

À compter d'aujourd'hui et jusqu'au 6 juin, les internautes peuvent télécharger une version bêta du jeu via Xbox Live, ce qui leur permettra de tester sa portion multijoueur.

Selon le vice-président de la division des jeux vidéo de Microsoft, Shane Kim, les ventes de Halo 3 devraient surpasser celles de la version précédente. En 2004, Halo 2 avait généré des revenus de 125 millions de dollars lors de sa première journée en magasin.

* New equipment: Instacover ; Smoke (suggested this might be a smoke grenade?) ; Jammer
* New vehicles: Chopper ; Pelican ; Shadow
* New weapons: Flamethrower ; Claymore Grenade
* New mode: Infection (described as "Destroy the Flood or become infected. Score points for killing flood or big points for infecting a human. The player with the most points wins."
* New rankings: The highest rankings are now Killpocalypse and Killionaire, instead of Double Kill and Triple Kill.
* A reference to a map editor has also been found, a returning feature from Halo 2.

Microsoft has begun promoting Halo 3 with a viral marketing campaign that promises to reveal more about the game's universe and backstory.

The campaign kicked off this weekend when groups from an organisation called The Society of the Ancients took to the streets of cities such as New York and London to hand out flyers with the message, "We are not alone."
The logo on their flyers and t-shirts matched the one used by a mysterious poster on the Halo forums. It also appeared on a cryptic email sent out by Microsoft.

What we do know is that the ancients are an alien species that visited earth thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years ago and who gave human evolution and technology a slight bump in the right direction. For that, we thank them.
