The companies didn't disclose the financial terms, and Microsoft said it's still evaluating how to incorporate Winternals' programs into its own products. Russinovich will become a technical fellow in Microsoft's Platforms & Services Division. Cogswell will be a software architect in the Windows Component Platform Team. Ed Bott, co-author of "Windows XP Inside Out," calls it "a great acquisition" for Microsoft.
As Bott notes, the deal comes about a week after Winternals announced that it settled a copyright infringement suit it filed against Best Buy Co. and its Geek Squad subsidiary for allegedly using and distributing unlicensed copies of Winternals software.
