Vista va sortir en octobre!

Message par pwel »

Microsoft has begun warming up its marketing machine with information bits and pieces about its Windows Vista operating system. The public this week learned about the different version of the operating system while product partners apparently have received a time frame for the launch of the software, TG Daily has learned. According to sources, Microsoft will introduce Vista between in the week of 2 October.

Beyond the low-level stuff, there are high level security changes. Users, by default, operate in a mode with fewer privileges than before, which means that "noobs" who don't know any better can't accidentally install software full of spyware.

Vista's Virtual PC Express to run Windows within Windows

Redmond (WA) - Following up on this morning's news of six versions of Windows Vista, Microsoft's next-generation client operating system, a Microsoft spokesperson told TG Daily this afternoon that Virtual PC Express, a feature of Microsoft's new Enterprise and Ultimate versions, will be designed to run older editions of Windows as a subsystem.

"Virtual PC Express will be able to run any previous version of the Windows operating system," the spokesperson wrote. "Customers who have annuity agreements with Microsoft automatically are granted a second license to install Windows as well as downgrade rights. This enables a customer to install an older version of Windows on top of Virtual PC Express without having to acquire an additional license."

What can be inferred from that statement is that some users who purchased retail editions of Windows XP, or found it pre-installed on their new PCs, may not be able to install XP into the Virtual PC Express subsystem without purchasing an additional license. Currently, most retail editions of XP require some form of product activation, in which a product key is checked against a database of installed systems at Microsoft, to make certain the OS isn't installed on more PCs than the license permits. A user can install one copy of Windows XP on the same PC multiple times, but not on two PCs.

Microsoft's burgeoning line of virtualization software, which currently includes Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual Server 2005 R2, provides a complete software-based PC environment, complete with AMI BIOS, to any guest operating system. Windows, of course, works fine, but a user could also install Linux or UNIX; and apparently Vista Enterprise and Vista Ultimate will also feature subsystem capabilities for UNIX software. Recently, Microsoft has made volume licensing exceptions for enterprises installing multiple instances of Windows Server 2003 on a Virtual Server system which is capable of running all those instances on a single processor. But today's statement indicates that, while subscription and volume-licensed users won't have to purchase a new license for XP to run virtually, retail users may still need to, as Microsoft will apparently consider a virtual PC to be a PC.

Vraiment cool! Sauf la passe sur les licences!

MicrosoftWatch.com is reporting that Windows Vista will be launched in the November time frame of this year. The site refers to a post on "The Official Microsoft Connections Blog," which apparently stated that "Yes, Vista will be released in November of this year." However, the author of the post apparently revised this statement to:

"This is the year... the year that Microsoft releases the newest version of Windows. We are targeting to make Windows Vista generally available in the second half of this year, and the exact delivery date will ultimately be determined by the quality of the product."

There is no doubt that this will ring in another round of speculation when Vista may be hitting stores. Here's our take.

TG Daily reported on 28 February that Microsoft is likely to introduce the operating system in the first week of October. According to our sources, there appears to be no reason to believe that this time has change; however we also know, that the launch is still more than half a year out in the future and launch dates can slip a week or two.

However, looking at the blog's source code, the meta tag reads "We are targeting to make Windows Vista generally available in the second half of this year, and" - which could indicate that the blog was never meant to carry a "November" release information or that this blog was one of Microsoft's famous controlled leaks: A piece of information that was meant to be edited a few hours after publication to keep the speculation about Vista alive. However, if that is true, then we could see Microsoft exploring the public reaction to a possible delay of Vista from October into November.

Leaving the thin ice of speculation, we do know that on of the most reliable indicators for the Vista launch will be the introduction date of Intel's Merom processors. While it is almost certain that the desktop version of Merom ("Conroe") will be released before Vista will be announced, we were told by several industry sources that Intel will be aligning Merom's launch with the introduction of Vista. Intel currently states that Merom will be available in the second half of this year, while sources have nrrowed that statement down to "early Q4".

In what Microsoft called an update to its road map, doused with a liberal dose of the term "on track," the company announced today a delay to the release of its consumer editions of Windows Vista, until at least January 2007. The announcement was apparently timed after the close of stock markets, so as to reduce panic selling.
